Styled Shoots
Before I started working in the events and wedding industry, I had no idea what a styled shoot was. Even during my own wedding planning experience, I didn’t spend a lot of time on wedding blogs, so the concept of styled shoots and inspiration shoots never stood out to me. Then, when I first started as an event and wedding planner, I realized I didn't have any of my own photos that represented the work I wanted to do. The solution? The styled shoot.
For people unfamiliar with the concept, a styled shoot (also known as an inspiration shoot) is when a group of vendors comes together to throw a fake wedding or fake party of some sort. It all starts with a concept, then a vendor team is gathered, a venue is selected, and on the shoot day, the team actually creates a wedding, bridal shower, dinner party or any kind of event you can imagine. The photographer captures all the details and those photos are then used for the vendors’ websites and submitted to a wedding blog for publication.
For me, participating in a styled shoot serves three purposes. First, it provides me with photos for my portfolio that illustrate my style and show prospective clients the aesthetic I gravitate towards (that being said, working with a client that is looking for a different aesthetic is NOT an issue). Second, styled shoots are a great marketing tool and having them published on wedding blogs is a great form of advertising and a way to get your name out there. The third and main reason I do styled shoots is that it gives me an opportunity to work with venues and vendors I may not have had a chance to work with previously. People get to see first-hand how organized, responsive, and responsible I am—my goal being that I coordinate everything in advance and the vendor team just has to show up on the day of the shoot and do their jobs. I try to make it as easy as possible for everyone participating, and working on these styled shoots has allowed me to create some amazing relationships.
As you can see from my Gallery, I do quite a few photo shoots :) So if you have a concept in mind and want someone to help execute it or if you are looking for a co-collaborator to brainstorm ideas and bring the chosen idea to life, then please reach out and let’s collaborate!!!
